Frequently Asked Questions About Estate Sales
Have questions about working with an estate sale company? We’ve answered some of the most common questions about the process, costs, preparation, and what to expect. At Rare Find Estate Sales, we help families throughout the DFW area make the process easier, whether they’re downsizing, relocating, or settling an estate.
What does an estate sale company do?
An estate sale company handles the process of turning the contents of a home into a successful sale. At Rare Find Estate Sales, that includes identifying items with resale value, researching and pricing every item, organizing and staging the home, advertising the sale, and managing shoppers and transactions.
We also understand that these aren't just items in a house. They're belongings collected over a lifetime, often connected to memories, milestones, hobbies, and family traditions. We take pride in treating each home and its contents with care and respect. We love seeing meaningful pieces find new homes where they can be appreciated and enjoyed for years to come.
Do I need to clean, donate, throw away, or organize anything before the sale?
Absolutely not! In fact, we encourage you not to. Your only job is to set aside the things you want to keep. You don't need to clean out closets, organize cabinets, price furniture, or separate items for donation. Leave the rest to us.
What types of items can be sold at an estate sale?
Almost anything in a home can potentially be sold! Common categories include furniture, antiques, artwork, jewelry, collectibles, vintage clothing, kitchenware, tools, electronics, and everyday household goods.
One of the biggest misconceptions about estate sales is that only large or expensive items are worth selling. In reality, smaller items can add up quickly.
You might be surprised by what sells. Vintage T-shirts with holes, partially used cleaning products, and even pantry items can have value to the right buyer. We know what to look for and will determine what can be sold and what should be discarded.
What items tend to sell for the most money?
It isn't always the furniture or large items that bring in the most money. Smaller household goods, collectibles, accessories, and clothing can collectively generate a significant portion of a sale.
Clothing is actually one of our biggest selling categories. Vintage pieces, everyday clothing, and accessories can all attract buyers. We take the time to look through everything because even items that seem ordinary can be valuable.
How long does the estate sale process take?
Our typical preparation timeframe is about 2–3 weeks. During that time, we research and price items, organize and stage the home, and advertise the upcoming sale.
Our estate sales are conducted over one weekend, allowing shoppers to visit and purchase items over the course of the sale.
How do you advertise an estate sale?
We use a combination of online estate sale platforms, our website, Facebook and other social media channels, email marketing, and our large subscriber list. We also share photos and previews to give shoppers an idea of what they'll find.
Our goal is to reach the right buyers and bring as many interested shoppers to the sale as possible.
Do I have to be present during the estate sale?
No. We manage the sale from start to finish, including preparation, staging, advertising, assisting shoppers, and handling transactions. You don't need to be there while the sale is taking place.
What happens to the items that don't sell?
We typically sell the majority of the items in a home, leaving very little behind. For the remaining usable items, we work with local charitable organizations whenever possible.
We want belongings to continue being useful and appreciated rather than simply going to waste.
What if an in-person estate sale isn't the right option?
Not every home or situation is suited for a traditional estate sale. In those cases, we may recommend an online estate auction. This allows us to market and sell items through an online bidding platform, reaching buyers beyond the immediate area.
We'll help determine which approach makes the most sense for your situation.
Do you offer moving services?
Yes! We work with Super Save Moving to help coordinate moving services for our clients and buyers. This is especially helpful when furniture and other large items need to be moved out of a home or transported after a purchase.
What areas does Rare Find Estate Sales serve?
We serve Plano, Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Lewisville, Richardson, Addison, Dallas, and many other communities throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Whether you're in North Dallas or another surrounding city, reach out and we'll let you know how we can help.
How much does Rare Find Estate Sales charge?
Our commission is based on several factors, including the size of the home, the contents, the amount of work involved, and the estimated overall value of the sale. Vehicles and certain high-value items may have a different commission structure.
We discuss all fees and details during your free consultation, so you know what to expect before moving forward.
